The exterior of the special edition R4 has been redesigned; this includes a new backplate incorporating iconic visual elements of MiDi, unmistakably showing the fan status of one who carries this special edition unit.

The MiDi-collab special edition R4 has enhanced bass impact and midrange clarity. The low frequencies have a strong sense of cohesion and speed; the drum set and especially the kick drum’s attacks are accentuated, avoiding the sense of muddiness caused by excess decay; the vocals in the midrange are full-bodied, with clear distinction between the grain of voices and metallicity of (the appropriate) instruments, maintained even under high volume; the highs are equal parts bright and appropriately proportioned for extended listening, with pedal distortion effects and ringing cymbal decays having their full aggressiveness conveyed without causing sibilance or fatigue, in perfect complement to the hardcore aesthetic of metal music.

Sporting an unprecendent-for-the-sector set of four separate ES9018C2M DAC chips in a matched array, the R4 has indubitable fidelity in digital-analog conversion, yielding higher resolution and wider dynamic range from any source file, bringing smoother, purer sound. Supporting native playback of DSD up to 256 and PCM up to 32bit/768kHz.

PCM / DSD dual customized conversion pathways

Separate conversion pathways for PCM and DSD conversion realized for the first time in portable DAPs; separate individually configured / designed DAC chips, LPF and power supplies for PCM and DSD conversion.

Device firmware automatically routes PCM and DSD each to their dedicated pathways. DSD channel more effectively rejects high ultrasonic noise, bringing substantially better listening experience for DSD.

Utilizing widely acclaimed class-A amplification throughout, the amplifier is composed of four OPA1652, 2 OPA1612 and 16 triodes, and has zero crossover distortion for instant transient response; output scales up to 525mW/32Ω, and distortion can be as little as 0.0005%, yielding a fine sense of power from music as well as exquisite detail.

Volume Locked

The latest firmware version come with volume locked to below limits stipulated by Chinese GB4943.1-2022 and EU IEC62368 regulations by default. To raise the volume limit to the full range of up to 100, you may simply go to system settings, scroll to the bottom to find and activate Developer Options, and from within which scroll to the bottom to find and deactivate Volume Lock.

Go to System Settings -> Activate Developer Options -> Turn off Volume Lock

Note: the Developer Options menu and activation toggle are hidden by default. To reveal it, go to System Settings->About and tap on the Firmware Version up to 10 times until the toast “You are now a developer!” appears. Any further questions may be directed via email to hello@hiby.com .
