In August 1940, Bf 109E-3 “Yellow 15” was flown by Karl Wolff, a pilot with III./Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52), one of the Luftwaffe’s most respected fighter units. During this period, JG 52 was stationed in northern France and engaged in intense operations over the English Channel as part of the Luftwaffe's air campaign against the United Kingdom. Wolff and his squadron were tasked with flying top cover for bomber formations, intercepting RAF fighters, and maintaining air superiority during the Battle of Britain, one of the most decisive air battles in military history. The aircraft bore the yellow tactical markings typical of Luftwaffe fighters at the time and carried distinctive unit insignia.
Although the Luftwaffe failed to achieve air superiority over Britain, the Bf 109E-3 earned a fearsome reputation for its agility, firepower, and speed.
